Even as many of us are trying to “go paperless,” there remains a place for the paperweight even if just as decoration, or in the case of Jewett City Savings Bank, as a way to mark an important occasion.
When did paperweights start appearing on our desks?
According to experts, paperweights date back to the creation of paper, around 100 BC, and are thought to have been a common tool made out of white jade and found in the scholar studios. By the 18th and 19th centuries, the paperweight’s popularity had grown in Europe, considered by many to be a luxury item that was both beautiful and functional. Today, paperweights continue to have a place on our desks and in our homes and offices, often coming in various shapes and sizes.
Recreating a decade’s old gift
In the 1930s, Jewett City Savings Bank created a glass paperweight to celebrate the completion of the Main Office building. In honor of its 150th anniversary, the Bank recreated the paperweight and gifted the new version to their corporators at this year’s annual meeting.
